THE CONTINUATION OF A GREAT 16TH CENTURY MYSTICAL WORK

John of the Cross (1542-1591) was a Spanish mystic, Carmelite friar and priest, who was---along with Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582)---a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. He wrote many famous books of mysticism, such as Ascent of Mount Carmel, Spiritual Canticle, Living Flame of Love, and Counsels of Light and Love. This work is essentially a continuation of 'Ascent of Mount Carmel.'
He begins by stating, "Into this dark night souls begin to enter when God draws them forth from the state of beginners---which is the state of those that meditate on the spiritual road... to the end that, after passing through it, they may arrive at the state of the perfect, which is that of the Divine union of the soul with God." (Pg. 37)
He recounts that on the first night, "the one night or purgation will be sensual, wherein the soul is purged according to sense, which is subdued to the spirit; and the other is a night or purgation which is spiritual, wherein the soul is ... subdued and made ready for the union of love with God." (Pg. 61) On the second night, "these two parts of the soul, the spiritual and the sensual, must be completely purged, since the one is never truly purged without the other..." (Pg. 96)
During the dark night, "the imagination is bound and can make no useful reflection; the memory is gone; the understanding is in darkness, unable to understand anything, and hence the will likewise is arid and constrained and all the faculties are void and useless, and in addition to all this a thick and heavy cloud is upon the soul, keeping it in affliction, and, as it were, far away from God." (Pg. 150)
He states that "this capacity for being described is not in the nature of pure contemplation, which is indescribable. And not only for that reason is it called secret... because this mystical knowledge has the property of hiding the soul within itself." (Pg. 161) On pages 167-174 he summarizes the Ten Steps.
John, and Teresa of Avila, are essential reading for anyone even remotely interested in mysticism.
