Don't leave home without it

If you believe literature's main purpose in existence is to induce pleasure, you could probably never find a better writer than Oscar Wilde.

All his plays are absolute delights from start to finish, even the ones that aren't The Importance of Being Earnest. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fantastic novel and a deserved classic. His poetry's derivative, but not bad by any stretch of the imagination. His stories, essays, letters, collections of epigrams, and other various writings are excellent reading as well, if you don't mind occasional melodrama or other minor missteps.

This is a relatively expensive collection, but one that is well worth it. I don't regret spending a penny. The print's a readable size and, to my somewhat expansive knowledge on Wilde, none of his writings have been omitted or forgotten.

Essential for those who want to enjoy literature while allowing it to expand the mind, but also looking for something deeper than Tuesdays With Morrie or other modern, popular tripe.

MAJOR defect

1) The table of contents were messed up. For example, instead of "Chapter One...[title of story/play]" it was literally "Chapter One...Chapter One".

2) The stories/plays did not have headings. The "Chapters" would end mid-sentence and start mid-sentence, without any sort of connection whatsoever.

Oscar Wilde is a great author, and if you want to do him any justice, buy the Collins Publication instead.

False advertising for a great poet

This travesty of a book is just a collection of completely illegible sections. There are no headlines, and no text to speak of. Unless you are well familiar with exactly how to scan, extract, and all other kinds of complicated computer procedures, you are left with something that ressembles shredded newspaper articles, assembled at random. They are selling you computer links under pretense of being an actual book. If I wanted to read the blasted thing online, I would not have ordered a bound book in the first place!

I was misled by the multitude of positive reviews here, but it seems to me now that all of them have forgotten one crucial thing: they were supposed to review the PRODUCT, not the writer. We all love Oscar Wilde, or we would not be perusing this page to begin with. The issue is not how great his works were, but what kind of product this book is, and in my opinion, it cannot be called a book at all.

Open it up, and try to make sense of out the gibberish inside. I have no desire to sit and work out all the intricacies of OCR and PDF files; I simply want to curl up with a good book. I am never going to order from this fraudulent company known as "General Books" again, but am instead going to invest in a better, albeit more expensive, collection of the great authour's works. Unless you want to sit endless hours by the computer to read a "book", I suggest you do the same.

The Best I've Read!

Rain of Gold is a book written by Victor Villaseñor an author of Mexican Heritage. Villaseñor wrote this book when he felt the urge to pas down to his children the history behind their name. Villaseñor traveled to Mexico and after years of hard work and several conflicts he published "Rain of Gold", the biography of his family. In "Rain of Gold" Villaseñor describes with full detail the lives of his ancestors in Mexico and later in the United States. More than just a story, Villaseñor gives a vivid image of life during the Mexican Revolution {the times of Pancho Villa}. He explains how his family was forced as well as other families to abandon their beloved country because of the violence and danger the Mexican Revolution brought to its citizens. Villaseñor also explains the hardships his family had to got through to adapt and survive prejudice, hunger and unfair work in the states. Not only does Villaseñor capture the struggles of his family but also the exciting and glorious moments his ancestors lived. This book has a vivid message to everybody of Mexican background. Especially to teenagers who usually don't get the chance to be taught their history with out somebody making fun or putting down their culture. This is the first book that I have truly related to, because of my Mexican background and hardships I've faced in this country. This is a book you just can't stop reading because you get so close to the characters. By the end of the book I assure you that not only will you know all of the people in the book but you will also respect and consider them part of your family! More importantly, I recommend this book to everybody who has parents or somebody who has immigrated to this country in search of opportunities and better life.

Rain of Gold

I am a 57 year old gringo living in Southern Arizona and received this book from a friend of mine who is related to the author. I did not expect much and the beginning had me wondering if I would make it through all 500+ pages of small print. It did not take very long for me to realize that this book was well above ordinary. Prior to reading this book, I personally had gotten the most enjoyment from " East of Eden " and " The Agony and The Ecstacy " and place Mr. Villasenor's novel along side both. I cried and laughed like hell and as a lifelong Catholic, was deeply moved by the incredible faith of both of his grandmothers. Some of the other reviewers were put off by his technique, I was not. I very much agree with those who found great enjoyment from this book, as I had a difficult time putting it down and experienced a real sadness as I read the final words, I did not want it to end. Mr. Victor Villasenor is one heck of a storyteller and I feel blessed to have entered into his family through his written words.

Rain of Gold a must read.

My wife borrowed this book from the local library and had to return it back because students have priority, so I searced Amazon and bought this book for my wife and she can't put it down as she reads it she starts to laugh out loud because of what is written she says it reminds her of the grammar her grandmother would use. She says she loves it, I have purchased the next book for her. She says the author is awesome. I have read some of the pages and it is as if I was back there again growing up in East L.A

A brilliant and sympathetic description of life for Muslim women

Geraldine Brooks is an evocative and sensitive writer whose research into her subject is responsible and detailed. This book benefits from the writer's first hand experience as a correspondent living in the Middle East and Asia. She is a committed feminist in the best sense and her sisterhood empathy shines throughout this intelligent and ethical work.

Ahead of its time

Although it was one of the first books written by Geraldine Brooks, it is the last one I have read. Looking at the lot of Islamic women. this book was written around 20 years ago, but is more relevant now that ever. To me it seems an objective look at the lived of these women - from the oppressed to the free, in a variety of settings. In regard to the plight f women in some of the more brutal regimes, which practice a warped form of Islam, Brooks asks how we would view a country that treated a coloured minority the way that these countries view treat women. A good question, that you should ask yourself after reading this fascinating book.

Interesting and provocative account

This book provides a well researched, thorough and excellently written account of Islam and its women. It is a nice balance of factual information and personal anecdotes and really opens your eyes to the wool that religion pulls over the eyes of humanity. A must read, especially for those interested in suffrage, religion and human rights.
